As the weather gets warmer in the spring and summer months, more motorcyclists take their bikes out for a ride. Unfortunately, being on a motorcycle makes you more vulnerable to dangers on the road.
Let’s discuss some of the biggest risks for motorcyclists.
#1. Road Hazards
We all know the feeling of hitting a pothole when we’re driving our car at a high speed. For motorcyclists, the risks of hitting a pothole are far more severe. Ideally, all roads would be flat, paved, and even-textured. However, motorcyclists must watch out for:
- Potholes
- Gravel
- Oil
- Puddle
- Branches
- Rocks
- Railroad tracks
- Random objects that have fallen from vehicles
If a motorcyclist does run into any of these hazards, it could cause a serious accident.
#2. Other Drivers
We often see public service announcements to watch out for motorcycles on the road. Unfortunately, many drivers of both cars and trucks aren’t as careful as they should be. A significant number of motorcycle accidents involve another driver.
Other drivers who don’t pay close attention to their surroundings accidentally collide with motorcyclists. A common example of this is lane switching. Drivers who do not check their blind spot can run directly into motorcyclists, causing a major accident.
Intersections are another key area where many car and motorcycle accidents take place. A specific problem is when cars make left-hand turns and don’t see the motorcyclist in their path.
Motorists need to be diligent about checking their surroundings.
#3. Reckless Driving
Distracted driving by either other motorists or the motorcyclists themselves can lead to a serious accident. Some examples of distracted driving include:
- Texting while driving
- Not looking at the road
- Eating while driving
- Talking to other passengers
- Not keeping both hands on the wheel or handlebars
In addition to distracted driving, drunk driving is also a problem for motorcyclists. It is estimated that over 20% of motorcycle accidents are alcohol-related.
