The Cloverleaf Apartments in Kansas City, Missouri, were recently shut down due to severe fire code violations and unsafe living conditions. The Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) attempted to schedule an annual inspection but received no response from management.
It was later revealed that the property owner had been incarcerated, leaving the complex without proper maintenance. As a result, the buildings deteriorated, with issues including leaks, mold, rodent infestations, and nonfunctional fire protection systems.
Kansas City Families Forced to Move Out of Apartment in 48 Hours
On February 26, KCFD ordered all residents to vacate within 48 hours. Many residents, including families, struggled to find alternative housing, with some relying on assistance from HUD and the Red Cross.
Residents described appalling conditions, with one tenant stating, her bathroom was flooding “like the Titanic.” She also pointed out infestations and mold. Another resident spoke on the broken promises of management, explaining how they were supposed to remodel and fix broken appliances.
Apartment Complex Shut Down Permanently
By March 3, KCFD officially announced the permanent closure of Cloverleaf Apartments in Kansas City, Missouri, shutting off utilities and boarding up the buildings. While 76 residents were relocated, most found housing on their own, while others received support from the Leumas organization, working on behalf of HUD.
KCFD emphasized that the closure was necessary for safety and blamed the situation on the property owner’s negligence.
